Spring is slowly
making its appearance here in Lefkas but the winter rains are butting in like
an angry demonstrator vying for his face to be on the television news. We can but make the best of it and
re-prioritise our ‘to do’ list for only those essential must do jobs.

The promise of spring |
Still there is plenty
to entertain us. There are the weekly
Mexican Trains dominos, Knit and Natter and Quiz night sessions at the Porto Café. These are always a good time to catch up with
the other residents of the marina and find out what is going on.
The major spring
social event on the island to bring us out of the winter doldrums is the annual
musical production by NIVADS (Nidri Very Amateur Dramatics Society) and the
Vliho Yacht Club. When the tickets had
gone on sale months ago we had expected to be gone from the marina and were
quite sad to have to miss an event everyone raved about. Then two days before the show some spare
tickets became available from one of the many in the area that had been laid
low by a nasty flu. Sadly for Kerri, her
misfortune was our gain and we were so happy to have the opportunity to go to
this great dinner theatre. What a
fabulous night we had!
The musical production is held in Vliho
Yacht club, about 20 km south of the town of Lefkas. There was a bus from
the marina with about 20 of us going, plus another 20 or 30 from other parts of
the island attended. We had an excellent meal and great
entertainment. I do like amateur dramatics. There was a wonderful amount of talent and some excellent voices. I love the way everyone has great fun giving it a go. NIVADS
is a small group of people mostly of a certain age, made up largely of British expats
but some local Greeks, who get together with a great sense of humour and fun to
give the community a very enjoyable night.
I laughed so hard and smiled so much my cheeks ached.
Our next diversion
came because my year long visa in Greece was about to expire so I had to make a
visa run to a non-Schengen country to renew.
(It doesn’t seem possible that a year has passed already.) We
hired a car on a rainy Monday for the easy 1.5 hour drive to Igoumenitsa. We left the car in Igoumenitsa and caught the
ferry to Corfu. Just as we were to board the ferry a thunderstorm came
and bucketed down rain. We were thoroughly soaked by the time we got on
board and spent the next 1.5 hours trying to dry off during the crossing.
When we were in Corfu
in September 2014, just before we bought Songster,
we stayed in Benetis and Gouvia, not in Corfu town, though we did visit it for
a few hours on a couple of occasions. It was lovely to explore the town a
bit more again. We stayed in a charming old (1862) restored hotel on the
waterfront. We walked all around the harbour then had an excellent delayed
birthday dinner for Bob in the old town.

Leaving our charming hotel |
The town has a very
Italian influence to its architecture so is very different from the old towns
on the Aegean islands. We intend to
spend quite a bit of time around Corfu when we sail up in May and are looking
forward to exploring some more of this pretty island.

The next morning the
weather cleared to a lovely spring day. We caught the 9am ferry to
Saranda in Albania which only took half an hour. Albania is an hour
behind Greece which gave us an extra hour to explore the quaint tourist
town. Saranda had a nice feel to it. All the businesses on the
waterfront were dusting off from the winter and getting ready for the upcoming
tourist season. There is still a slight patina of dour, soviet-like repression
from the Hoxha days that we noticed also in Durras when we were in Albania last
year, but in Saranda and Durras they are trying hard to be bright, cheerful and
welcoming.
We walked around the
town taking it all in, had a nice seafood pasta lunch and then caught the ferry
back to Corfu then another ferry from Corfu to Igoumenitsa on the mainland,
picked up the car and drove back to Lefkas. By 8.30 we were back on Songster,
shaking our heads in wonder that just a few hours before we were having
lunch in Albania.

It was really nice to
get away. I realised that we have not been off the island of Lefkas for
three months. I know that isn't that long to be in one place for most,
but for us I think that may be the longest we stayed in any one place without
some sort of excursion for about the last four years.
