Sailing

Sailing: the fine art of getting wet and becoming ill while slowly going nowhere at great expense.

The Boats

Our Starter Boat - Solar Mist

Powering on to win 2nd place at the Lord Mayor's Regatta
Solar Mist
is a 20 foot Sunmaid trailer sailer built in 1982.  She was an excellent boat on which to learn to sail - slow and heavy but very forgiving and takes rough conditions in her stride.  She has a comfy V-berth, portopotty, 2 burner metho stove, sink and 50 L water tank; making her very livable for a weekend away.  She also has a very reliable 9 hp Tohatsu outboard  motor to get us along when there is no wind.

After sitting under a tarp for 4 years while we sailed in the Mediterranean on Songster, we knew Solar Mist needed to get back on the water and sail.  With a few tears, we sold Solar Mist at the end of 2018.  We hope the new owner enjoys her as much as we did.

Our Live Aboard Boat -  Songster

Songster sailing in the southern Aegean off the Turkish coast
Songster is an Oyster 39 centre cockpit ketch commissioned in 1980, an old boat but very pretty and in good condition.  She has a good providence having crossed the Atlantic five times and circumnavigated from 2002 to 2011.

Her Stats:
LOA:    39.5 ft, 12.03 m
Beam:   12 ft, 3.62 m
Draft:    5.5 ft, 1.67 m
Disp:     11.72 T

She has a forward V-berth with adjoining head for guests and a spacious owner's aft cabin also with an adjoining head.  She has a Fridge - Freezer, 4 burner gas cooker and oven/grill.  She has a roomy salon with chart table and folding dinning table and is nicely upholstered throughout - a very comfortable live aboard boat.

She has three water tanks holding a total 440 L and a water maker.  She carries 430 L of diesel fuel giving a fuel range of about 700 nm or 1300 km. Songster  runs on 12, 24 and 240 volts, depending on the system and has a Northern lights generator and inverters.  In short she is self-sufficient for long range sailing.
