Granada is a great city with a wonderful fusion of European
and Moorish cultures. However it rained
the whole time we were there and the gray, wet skies were not the best for
sightseeing.

We had a lovely room overlooking the Plaza de la Universidad
and the Parroquia de Santos Justo y Pastor church.

Wandering around on a Sunday
morning we came upon the Cathedral de la Anunciación. The cathedral is a magnificent Spanish Renaissance
building. They were just starting the
Sunday mass given by the Arch Bishop so we thought we would stay and
watch. This was the first time I have
been to mass in about 30 years and as it was also in Spanish, it was quite a
novelty. The woman singing during the
service had a beautiful voice which was a special bonus.

The main attraction we wanted to see was Alhambra. Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex
overlooking the city. It was first built
as a fort in 889 and in 1333 was made into a palace by the Sultan of Granada. Too late we read that it is highly advisable
to purchase tickets in advance. So when
we got to the ticket office we could only get into the grounds and a few
buildings and not the large palace. So
we walked around the lovely gardens in the rain with the hordes of Chinese
tourist groups. Despite the less than
ideal conditions it was a very pleasant day.
